Boyish: ethical denim
Boyish jeans is the brand that does us good. A vintage inspired looking denim that reminds us of our old Levi’s, all with a modern twist and cuts fitting feminine silhouettes. Even better? Its sincere and long-standing commitment to support sustainable fashion. Created by native-Californian Jordan Nodarse, the collections are designed in Los Angeles before being produced in a marked out geographical area of Turkey, where all the factory floors are located within a radius of 30 miles, for the sake of lowering the carbon footprint. Thus, they use certified organic cotton from Izmir, which is then sent to mills in Adana, the cutting and sewing being carried out in Istanbul. All scraps are saved and sent back to Adana for reuse purpose. The factory floors are human-size with salaries above the legal minimum and where safety conditions are ensured for all employees.
The brand also makes efforts at every stage of the production, whether by using a ozone washing system which saves 80% of the water required, compared to traditional methods and their use of detergent and other chemicals, or else with a dying process that is less damaging to the environment. When you know that to produce a pair of jeans you need no less than 7000 liters of water, any savings are worth taking. Indeed, there is first the water necessary for the cultivation of plants, but jeans receive many treatments. They must be prepared, washed, bleached and all these phases require hundreds of liters of water each. Overall, Boyish only uses a third of the amount of water required to produce a pair of jeans, and the water used during the manufacturing process is each time treated and recycled in a closed circuit. So nothing gets lost. Its goal has always been to minimize its impact on the environment as much as possible without compromising on quality. This is why it uses 100% natural fibers, heavier and stronger, which are more often found in men's denim, unlike stretch materials, more fragile, which in addition are derived from petroleum and contain micro- plastics. Boyish is destined to become these vintage jeans that we pass on from generation to generation, at a price rounding 150 Euros. Taking care of the planet while still being stylish, what could be better?
